Great Story, Great Characters

Dearest Rogue (Maiden Lane) - Elizabeth Hoyt

**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review**
Lady Phoebe Batten is a powerful duke's sister and is blind. She yearns to have a "normal" life. Unfortunately, both stop her from having one. Captain James Trevillion is a former King's dragoon. He has brooding, serious and has a permanently injured leg, forcing his early retirement. He was hired by Phoebe's brother as her personal guard. When several kidnapping attempts are made, James takes Phoebe somewhere safe where not even her brother can find her. When they come back, they both will have lost their hearts.
This is the first book I've read from this author and having just come from reading a bad historical novel, I was a little skeptical. However, once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down when I was forced to go to work.
Phoebe, not having been born blind, is forced to become strong in a way most people can't imagine. She guides herself through scent and touch and an inner-sense that tends to be spot on. through the book, she realizes how much she has come to rely on James for his friendship while resenting her cage. She deals with feelings she never thought she'd be able to experience because of the different situations life has given her. James has already lived a long and not very happy life. He's mostly a loner and his pride in his job is the one thing he's always relied on, even with a lame leg. When he realizes his feelings for Phoebe have gotten past being a protector, he tries to stay away to keep her safe. During this book, he is able to heal long-buried wounds and by the end of the book, he is finally able to find peace.
I really loved these characters and this story. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes this genre.
